	Ferdinand is a multidisciplinary scientist, designer, and entrepreneur with expertise spanning materials science, biotechnology, and innovation design. He holds a PhD in Materials Science from Cornell University (NY), a MA in Innovation Design Engineering from the Royal College of Art (UK), and a BSc in Computational Chemistry from Heidelberg University (GER).&#38;nbsp;
In 2021, Ferdinand founded CipherX Technologies Ltd, a deep-tech startup pioneering microneedle technology for applications in consumer, cosmetic, and medical markets.Prior to founding CipherX, he served as a Customer Project Manager at Vetter Pharma (Ravensburg, GER), where he supported Fortune 500 pharmaceutical companies in the development, packaging, and market launch of injectable drug products. He also worked as a research associate in the Molly Stevens Lab at Imperial College London, focusing on technology translation in biomedical materials.From 2013 to 2018, he was a research assistant at  Cornell University and Memorial Sloan Kettering-Cornell Center for Translation of Cancer Nanomedicine (NY), where he developed novel nanomaterials for cancer theranostics.

	In Short&#38;nbsp;
Cornell Dots or C Dots are a silica-based sub-10 nanometer nanoparticle platform that can be structurally tuned to achieve different functions, e.g. cancer targeting and cancer visualization. C Dots are currently in Phase II FDA Clinical Trials making nanobots a clinical reality.
	CONTEXT
Tumor tissue and healthy tissue are difficult to distinguish by eye. Labeling a tumor with fluorescent markers in real time can support surgeons in detecting cancer sites at an early stage and help in the clean removal of cancerous tissue while leaving healthy tissue intact (Image-Guided Surgery). Such surgical decisions can have tremendeous impact on the life quality of patients. For example, lymph node removal, a common procedure to stop the spread of cancer, can cause a life-long risk of developing lymphoedema (severe swelling of body tissue).&#38;nbsp;

	How are Nanobots used?
First, nanobots are injected into the body, then, molecules decorating the surface of these nanobots recognize cancer cells and stick to them for about 24 hours. During that time period a surgeon can use a special camera to see cancer via fluorescent light that is emitted from the nanobots.

How are nanobots made?
Cornell Dots self-assemble in water using silica precursor molecules and various additives. After thousands of material experiments a number of reliable protocols were established that yield in high quality materials.&#38;nbsp;

	How do we guarantee the safety of nanobots?Any commercial use of substances in the human body is strictly regulated and tested by respective governmental agencies (i.e. FDA, EMA, PMDA, etc.). In order to translate nanobots into the clinic and guarantee safe application, it is crucial that particle properties are well understood and methods for standardized quality control are established. For that purpose, we employ well-established nanocharacterization methods and developed novel methods where needed.

	Iteration 1 Cardboard chain and sprocket prototype with metal mesh lenses. Chain and gears are made of corrugated cardboard inners. This prototype allowed for a proof of concept.
	Iteration 2 Laser cut wood and acrylic prototype testing locations, dimensions, and fit. A lower modulus gear was used for the most basic gear teeth mesh test. Adjustments were made for wearer comfort.
	Iteration 3 Laser cut acrylic prototype with improved locating features and mounting for components. This proto- type showed that the laser cutter was reducing gear diameter by 0.5 mm, decreasing gear mesh.
	Iteration 4 Final acrylic prototype with improved locating, securing, and UX features. Locating features were
emphasized with red acrylic instead of hidden.

	QuasiLink is a vertical ceramic screen system with aperiodic symmetry that was inspired by quasicrystals.&#38;nbsp;Quasicrystals are patterns that are able to fill space, but unlike crystals do not possess translational symmetry.

CONTEXT Despite being so ubiquiteous in their application ceramic tiles and blocks have surprisingly lacked recognition as a viable building component in contemporay architecture practice. The use of CAD/CAM technologies to automate the design and fabrication of ceramic form has inspired a new appreciation for ceramic material in  our built environments.&#38;nbsp;QuasiLink serves as a design research project to explore the plastic nature of clay in combination with generative design methods.

	Step I - 2D Tiling System
First, the 2D tile was derived from Tübingen triangles that can be used to model quasicrystals.&#38;nbsp;

The 2D tile is able to fill an area (bottom left), but can also create versatile apertures (bottom right).

	Step II - 3D Base Tile
The 2D base tile was turned into a 3D base tile by extrusion into the z-dimension. The 3D base tiles were used as 3D-printed models to explore different aggregation designs.

	Step III - 3D Tile&#38;nbsp;Ex-/IntrusionsThe 3D base tile is further transformed by a series of simple geometric extrusions and intrusions at single points of a tile. This leads to a multitude of different tile designs and results in complex screen designs. The simple transformations reference the original Tübingen triangles on the final screen.

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Milling
Molds were designed in Rhino 3D and made by CNC milling plaster blocks. All half molds could be combined interchangeably to create a large variety of tile designs.





	Slip-CastingLiquid slip was poured into the plaster molds and left to densify at the plaster inner surface. Excess slip was drained and reused.

	FiringGreen ceramic tiles (leather-like consistency) were fired in a kiln to produce a vitrified tile.
	


	Glazing
The hardened tiles were glazed with a paint spray gun and fired again.

	The Iridescence of Birds An iridescent feather may look black; but when viewer, feather, and light source align at the right angle, vibrant colors appear. Iridescent Paper is a project that aims to give paper an iridescent quality to mimic a bird’s feather while maintaining the mechanical properties of a paper.

	The paper is treated with a block copolymer solution. The ability of the polymer to self-assemble into nanostructures on the surface of the cellulose fibers of paper causes iridescence (also see Project: A Needle Woman: Galaxy was a Memory, Earth is a Souvenir).

	Iridescent Origami Mechanical MetamaterialHere, I used the Miura-ori origami to create mechanical bulk properties that emerge from tessellated folding patterns.&#38;nbsp;During the fabrication of iridescsent paper, different iridescent surface patterns can be introduced.

	Old Shoes
Photographing Life’s SouvenirsWhile helping my parents move, I accidentally found a box filled with my old shoes. My mother had kept them in her basement for years. This nostalgic encounter made me question the value of objects from the past. Despite being stored in a basement, often unaccesible and out of sight, they maintain precious to us. 
Having lived in America, Germany, and England, every move unwillingly becomes an eradication of objects including those that are close to me. I leave them behind, I sell them, donate them, dump them, or&#38;nbsp; pass them on.

	The House of Relief is a short film about a speculative organ that allows users to amplify the experience of virtual worlds to cope with isolation during space travel or pandemics. This project was a finalist out of 79 projects in the Grand Challenge Competition hosted by Logitech and Cern.
