Abstract

Art and materials innovation have always gone hand in hand, but today many advanced materials developed in laboratories remain inaccessible to artists. This paper tells the story of a unique collaboration between scientists and artist Kimsooja to change that. Together, they created a new type of iridescent (color-shifting) coating for a 14-meter-tall architectural artwork titled A Needle Woman: Galaxy Was a Memory, Earth is a Souvenir, now permanently installed at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in the UK

The team designed a special polymer that can organize itself into extremely small, repeating layers—thousands of times thinner than a human hair. These nanoscopic layers interact with light to produce vibrant structural colors, similar to those seen in butterfly wings or mother-of-pearl. Unlike traditional pigments, the color does not come from dyes, but from the material’s internal structure.

A major achievement of this work was scaling the material from laboratory experiments to architectural size. The researchers developed a practical coating method that allowed them to apply the self-assembling polymer onto large transparent panels while maintaining uniform color and durability. The final installation has remained stable outdoors for years, demonstrating both aesthetic impact and long-term material performance.

Beyond this single artwork, the study shows how advanced materials science can meaningfully engage with art and architecture. It demonstrates that cutting-edge nanotechnology can move beyond the lab and become a medium for cultural expression, reconnecting scientific innovation with creative practice.
